Dan Jones wasn’t planning to wear a tie to work today. Instead, the managing director of mortgage sales and trading at Gleacher & Co. Securities was going to wear shorts and paddle around Manhattan standing up on an oversized surfboard.
Jones, who works with Descap, Gleacher’s mortgage and structured products division, will join about 200 other competitors, professional and amateur, in the O’Neill SEA Paddle NYC, a 26.5-mile stand-up paddle charity race.
“Paddling through skyscrapers has a surreal feel to it,” Jones, who also competed in the race in 2009, said in a telephone interview. “We’re also going through parts of Manhattan that most New Yorkers never see.”

Imagine Jay-Z driving up the West Side Highway or smarmy Sean Hannity looking out his office window and seeing a bunch of loonies standing erect on surfboards while stroking their way through the Hudson River. They might see just that on Friday, August 12th.
Now in its fifth year, the participants in the Surfers’ Environmental Alliance NYC Paddle, a 26.5-mile endurance journey around the island of Manhattan, have heard all the cracks already. “There are no dead bodies in the river,” says O’Neill Northeast rep and paddle enthusiast Gary “Grand Poobah” Clayton of Seaside Park, NJ. “It’s actually pleasantly clean, and it’s amazing. You feel so small out there on the water. There are seaplanes landing, currents, bridges, and incredible skyscrapers. It occupies your six hours on the water.”
